On October 10, 2005, Orange County (Florida) Deputy Sheriff Adam Pierce was shot in the line of duty. He and his fiancée, Melissa, had taken out a mortgage with Bank of America to buy a home that his father built. As their bills accumulated after the shooting, Adam's relative went to her local Bank of America banking center to see what could be done. The Personal Banker suggested they write a letter outlining their circumstances which started the ball rolling towards, what has is now known as the Neighborhood Champions® Protected Mortgage® Program.
